Athanasio and the Lion (Part 1)

Did you know that there are eight different types of lions in Africa? In Tanzania, we have the Tsavo lion. This subspecies is huge, and can measure up to300cm (10ft) long and 91cm (3ft) tall. One of the most interesting things about the Tsavo lion is that the males are usually maneless! Scientists aren't sure why male Tsavo lions don't have manes, but some speculate that they adapted to traveling through thick and thorny undergrowth where a mane would get caught too easily.
You may have heard of the "The Ghosts of Tsavo", two Tsavo lions that killed 35 railroad workers in Uganda (or more, if you can believe those tall tales). The lions were called "ghosts" because they eluded all attempts at capture for a year. It's true, and Tsavo lions, like other subspecies of lions, have been known to hunt humans. However, in general lions don't hunt or eat humans and, like most animals, prefer to avoid them, if they can. In fact, you can throw a stone at a lion, and he'll run away! Seriously, though, don't try this at home!  Keep throwing rocks at the lion and eventually he'll become annoyed and kill you. Then he will refuse to eat you, the ultimate insult. Why? Because a crazy human like you is not fit for his discriminating palate; you are only good for carrion food.
Of course, livestock and lions are an entirely different matter, and often trouble between man and beast results from differing opinions on who is allowed to eat that livestock.  My father was the greatest hunter of his day.  One day a Tsavo lion started hunting his livestock. You can find out what happened in this video:
